Narcotics busts hit a high

SARS customs officials have been hitting drug traffickers hard of late, with a number of large seizures.But no one knows the true size of the narcotics trade in South Africa, so it is difficult to asses the impact of the busts.This month customs officials have seized drugs with a street value estimated at R17-million in three hauls.Lebombo border officials found 51 bags of ephedrine and 14 bags of crystal meth in hidden compartments of a car. The drugs had an estimated street value of R7-million. At OR Tambo International Airport, cocaine with a street value of R1-million was found abandoned in toilet cubicles on two separate flights from Brazil.On Monday, customs officials and a dog unit discovered 30kg of cocaine worth R9-million. The substance was in a tagless black bag that arrived on a flight from Sao Paolo, Brazil.Inside the bag were pieces of carbon paper, a green duvet and 30 sealed blocks of cocaine.SARS had not replied to questions about the increase in drug busts, at the time of going to press. It was difficult to determine the impact of the latest successes as it was unclear how much dope was coming in or passing through South Africa, said University of Cape Town criminologist Mark Shaw."Seizures are more a measure of police activity," said Shaw.Fellow UCT criminologist Simon Howell said that, using the principle of supply and demand, the seizures should cause the price of drugs to increase. He said though the price of cocaine had spiked in the past four months, "we don't know if this is from the rand sliding, or [ the] seizures ".But, said Howell, when factoring in inflation, the price of cocaine had fallen over the past decade...
