Oscar Pistorius's shot at redemption

These are the words of convicted murderer and Paralympian Oscar Pistorius in an interview with the UK's ITV.Oscar Pistorius: The Interview will be broadcast tonight."If I were afforded the opportunity at redemption, I'd like to help the less fortunate. I'd like to believe that if Reeva could look down on me that she'd like me to have that life," he says in the programme. The interview will be the first occasion on which the former "Blade Runner" has given his personal account of the events of February 14 2013, when he fatally shot his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.The interview forms part of a Carte Blanche special that will include a panel discussion. Here's when you can watch the Oscar Pistorius interview in South AfricaOscar Pistorius: The Interview is set to be aired on Carte Blanche (Channel 115) at 10:55 tonight.Pistorius, who is awaiting sentencing for his crime, maintains that Steenkamp's death was a tragic accident.In the interview, he said although he believed he should be punished with a long sentence for his crime, he did not think a murder charge was accurate."At times I don't feel like I should have the right to live for taking someone else's life. What's difficult is dealing with the charge of murder," he said.Pistorius told ITV he had not always been convincing while giving evidence but blamed his performance on his long ordeal. His defence team says he is suffering from anxiety and depression. In the interview, Pistorius admitted that he owned nine to 11 firearms, and had ordered a semi-automatic rifle, but added that he kept only a 9mm handgun at home.Asked why he needed such an arsenal, Pistorius said that, like most South Africans, he had had direct experience of violent crime.Production is under way on another documentary on the killing.Hartiwood Films and Deepend Films announced last month that shooting has begun on Beyond Reasonable Fact, a three-part documentary exploring the events that led up to Steenkamp's death.The production companies have acquired the film and documentary rights from Pan Macmillan SA for Mandy Wiener and Barry Bateman's book on Pistorius, Behind the Door, on which the documentary will be based.Oscar Pistorius: The Interview is on M-Net and M-Net City at 10.55pm; repeats on Supersport throughout the day tomorrow...
