July 'the social event of the year'

French champagne, fine whisky, sushi and oysters are what the mink and manure set will be feasting on at the Vodacom Durban July this Saturday.More than 50,000 people are expected to descend on the Greyville race course for the annual social and horse racing festival.The lavishly decorated marquee village alone is expecting a crowd of 12000 racing fans, with 3,500 waitrons, bar staff and hostesses hired to attend to guests.Gameplan Media's Dave Macleod said the event had transformed "into so much more than just a prestigious horse racing contest, with locals and out-of-province racing fans flocking to star in the social event of the year"."In a first for the Vodacom Durban July and the African continent, no [fewer] than four double-decker marquees will be erected, requiring plenty of manpower and a full month to assemble."The double-deckers have become the ultimate status symbol of the event... raised above everyone else offering up an unrivalled VIP experience," he said.Catering preparations are expected to start on Thursday, with 40 chefs sweating it out in the kitchens.The traditional Durban curry is a must on the menu and about 8000 portions will be prepared. In addition, 2600 pieces of sushi and 1200 oysters will be served.Jack Daniels Sound City is set to attract the lion's share of young racegoers with its lineup of top local acts like Mafikizolo, Mi Casa and Black Coffee.Jack Daniels VIP tickets range from R1,490 to R3,000 per person.Party-goers will also be spoilt for choice as Chris Brown will headline the "Mother of all parties" at the Kings Park Stadium on Saturday night.Tickets range from R450 for general access to R750 for golden circle, while those with extra cash can pay R1800 for a VIP package...
