SA's stake in Europa League

07 July 2016 - 10:20 By NICK SAID

Thereis plenty of South African interest in the Uefa Europa League this week. Lebogang Phiri's Danish side Brondby have all but done the job as they lead Iceland outfit Valur 4-1 from the first leg of a first-round tie played away from home.Phiri, who had only returned from national team duty with the Under-23s at the Cosafa Castle Cup in Namibia days before, came off the bench for the second half of that game and got an assist as his side finally sprang to life with four goals in the second period. He will hope to start tonight in the home leg, just as he is strongly linked with a move away from Brondby as contract talks with the club drag on.Should Brondby advance as expected, they will face Scottish second-tier side Hibernian in the next round.Granwald Scott's Slovan Bratislava from Slovakia still have much work to do in their tie against Albanian side Partizani Tirana, which ended 0-0 away from home last week.Scott had to watch that first game from the bench and will hope for game-time this time.Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Tefu Mashamaite will be an interested spectator this week as his Swedish side Hacken await the outcome of the tie between Linfield of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland's Cork City.Cork lead 1-0 from the first leg, with their home game to come and are expected to provide the second-round opposition for Hacken.Bafana Bafana right-back Anele Ngcongca still has two years remaining on his current deal at Belgian side Genk and, if he can patch things up with coach Peter Maes, he could feature for Genk in the Europa League. ..
