Johannesburg romance writer Romy Sommer is the first African author to be nominated for the prestigious international Romance Writers of America award.Although her novel Not a Fairy Tale did not win in the mid-length contemporary category, Sommer was "thrilled and honoured" to be nominated. Speaking from San Diego, California, where the authors gathered for the awards yesterday, she said: "The authors nominated for this award over the years include some of the biggest names in romance publishing and I still can't believe I am now one of them."A film producer by day and founder of the Romance Writers' Organisation of SA, she said there was a thriving local community of romance writers. While local sales figures are not available, globally it exceeds $1-billion a year. The Afrikaans romance market was "very big"."English romance readers tend to read books published overseas, as local publishers do not publish much romance, if any, in English." ..
