20 July 2016 - 09:19 By LEONIE WAGNER

Anti-apartheid activist Dulcie September died in a hail of an assassin's bullets in a foreign country but her story is rarely told. Now her unsolved murder will be relived on stage, with veteran actress Denise Newman recalling September's mysterious death in a one-woman play. The production, titled Cold Case: Revisiting Dulcie September, is directed by Basil Appollis and written by former journalist, now film-maker, Sylvia Vollenhoven. It recounts the life of September, imprisoned by the apartheid government, and the events leading up to her assassination in France.September, from the Cape Flats, was shot five times in the back of her head in 1988 outside the ANC offices in Paris.Nearly three decades after her brutal murder, the case is still unsolved.Said Vollenhoven: "[Writing the story] helped me understand deeply the horror of the apartheid government."South Africa has a hidden, distorted history and we've been lied to."Newman said: "This is such a dramatic story and we should tell it. We have a duty to people like Dulcie, who lived extraordinary lives and made sacrifices for our democracy without reaping the benefits. The real tragedy is that no one has taken responsibility or been held accountable for her murder."Cold Case: Revisiting Dulcie September opens at the Johannesburg Market Theatre tonight and runs until August 7...
