Two navy officers are allegedly behind the theft of military weapons, including hand grenades and heavy-calibre machine guns, from Simon's Town naval base. The men were arrested in predawn raids on their homes in Steenberg carried out by heavily armed specialised military and police yesterday. The arrests come days after thieves bypassed highly sophisticated security systems at the base's armoury. The Times has learnt that the team are investigating information that the suspects, aged 18 and 26, and several accomplices who are still being sought, allegedly used military vehicles to remove the munitions from the base. Among the weapons taken were 77 hand grenades, R1 assault rifles, Uzi submachine guns and 12.75mm and 20mm machine guns. The investigating team managed to track down the suspects through intelligence networks. According to the Hawks, a large quantity of weapons had been recovered, but not all. A military source said information indicated that the suspects had already arranged buyers for the equipment. "We are investigating that they allegedly received specific orders, with some of the weapons chosen obsolete."The suspects will appear in court soon on charges of housebreaking, theft and illegal possession of stolen property...
