Koeberg nuclear power station's safety officer has been suspended after a drone crashed on the site. Eskom spokesman Khulu Phasiwe said staff under the safety officer had handed the drone back to its owner, who was standing outside the facility - a national key point - without the incident being investigated.No damage was caused. The suspension is a precautionary measure as part of an investigation. Police are also investigating.In a separate incident, a Koeberg power station manager and plant manager have been placed on precautionary suspension after allegedly handing over the operation's documents to a third party. The matter is before court.The suspensions come as the National Union of Mineworkers plans to intensify its strike that it says will affect electricity output. "We have no option, unless Eskom comes to the table with something better than what they have offered," said NUM general secretary David Sipunzi.He said the union was talking to Solidarity and the National Union of Metalworkers of SA to expand the strike. The main demands centre on a double-digit increase for Eskom's lowest-paid workers and an increase in the housing allowance to R3000.Phasiwe said the power utility had contingency plans in place.Strikes are forbidden by law at Eskom because electricity generation is seen as an essential service."We have noted their intention to go on strike, but we are still in negotiations. We are entering the second round and will go to the CCMA. We are waiting for the CCMA to tell us when we should meet," Phasiwe said. ..
