Ever found yourself in a bottle store staring blankly at row upon row of wine, unable to fathom which bottle to choose? Most times we leave the store with tried and trusted bottles that we've tasted many times before, but now the new Smart Wine Shelf by tech company SAP Hybris is helping wine lovers be more adventurous. It's a wine shelf that's connected to the internet and therein lies the magic. The in-store shelf guides consumers to the bottle of wine most suited to their taste by using a mobile app, downloadable in-store.Customers are taken through 10 questions lasting about a minute - five for red wine and five for white. The consumer's personal wine profile is then uploaded to the wine shelf. According to the profile, the most suitable bottles of wine light up, making it easy to make a choice.Once the bottle of wine has been selected, additional information is displayed on a screen next to the wine shelf, including suggested food pairings, winery details, varietal, alcohol and acidity content. It also rates the bottle of wine against the consumer's profile indicating, percentage wise, exactly how close the fit is.Smart Wine Shelf is a great example of how technology is making our lives easier and more personalised."The benefits for both retailers and consumers are enormous," says Brett Parker, managing director, SAP Africa. "With so much online competition, in-store experiences now need to be fun and engaging."Not only do concepts such as SAP's Smart Wine Shelf provide for this, upping the customer experience and ultimately customer satisfaction, but smart technology also provides the retailer with access to valuable analytics."And this is just the beginning. Beer mats in pubs will soon be able to automatically alert bar tenders when your glass is empty and you need a refill...
