Cape Town entrepreneur Zaid Philander is changing the design world one bag at a time with his über-stylish eco-friendly design company, I Scream & Red. I Scream & Red bags are all made from recycled materials such as seat belts, reused car and home upholstery and rejected fabric samples."We also bind our products with natural or organic cotton and other natural materials to ensure that they're 'green' ," says Philander."I created I Scream & Red towards the end of 2008 and began by selling bags to friends and family," he says. The idea was to create the most planet-friendly bags he could, endorsing the environment-conscious movement in the fashion industry.Philander's bags have a distinct appeal: they're colourful with bold, interesting prints, textured materials, and seat belt carry straps."My designs are stylish yet casual," he says. The recycled material Philander uses to produce his bags ensures that each one is unique. "The recycled materials I use are limited, so you'll never see anyone else with that same bag as yours," says Philander. In today's polluted society, Philander is helping to keep the planet clean with one loop of the needle at a time. He's rigorous in how environmentally friendly his product is. "All materials are sourced in Cape Town within the vicinity of my production to limit our carbon emissions," he says.He was nominated and selected as a Climate Change Champion through the British Council's Low Carbon Futures programme .Philander's integrity is evident in his commitment to empowering others and teaching design principles to people living with disabilities, encouraging them to start their own businesses."Passion and resilience will get you anywhere," he says.To shop for I Scream & Red, go to threadsproject.co.za/brand/ i-scream-amp-red..
