Blaze guts UKZN Pietermaritzburg campus hall

Msunduzi firefighters battled to contain a massive fire in a hall on the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Pietermaritzburg campus early yesterday morning. The cause of the fire at the main exam venue was unclear and there were no initial reports of injuries.UKZN spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said the blaze started at about 4am."The fire department was called in and managed to extinguish the flames by 7am. The cause has not yet been established."Security officials suspect arson and an investigation is under way."He said the university's risk management services and police were on high alert and monitoring the campus.A fire on Monday gutted a coffee shop on UKZN's Durban campus, where there have been ongoing protests by students.Both campuses were closed last week after disruptions over a number of issues, including tuition fees, complaints about accommodation and security, as well as in-fighting among student bodies.UKZN vice-chancellor Albert van Jaarsveld assured students and staff on Tuesday that the university's academic programme would continue, despite protests."We urge students to cease and desist from engaging in illegal and destructive acts and allow space for consultation to take place," Van Jaarsveld said."Security has been beefed up on all campuses and every effort is being made to ensurethe academic programme proceeds as scheduled, with no interruptions," the vice-chancellor said.The Witness newspaper reported the fire at the Pietermaritzburg campus in a tweet yesterday that said: "#UKZN Pmb campus building razed in massive fire early this morning."The examination hall was extensively damaged and part of the roof caved in...
