In a state over rhino

28 September 2016 - 10:14 By Simon Bloch

South Africa should declare a state of emergency over rhino poaching or risk losing the fight to save the species. This is the call being made by a leading African conservationist. This comes after seven rhino were butchered for their horns at KwaZulu Natal's flagship Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park on Thursday last week and two others were killed elsewhere in Zululand.A total of 117 rhino have been killed in KwaZulu-Natal so far this year."It is high time that Minister Edna Molewa declares a national state of emergency and puts in place strategic measures to stop the killings."That would attract global support at the ongoing Cites convention" said Dr Paula Kahumbu, conservationist and CEO of Kenyan NGO WildlifeDirect. ..
