Restaurant review: Plenty to fire your appetite

28 September 2016 - 10:58 By Andrea Nagel

Marble - celebrity chef David Higgs's much-anticipated restaurant in Rosebank - is exceptional in many ways. Marble is part of the new art mile on Keyes Avenue. It is located on the top floor of the impressive Trumpet building and the views across the leafy parts of Johannesburg are beautiful, especially at sunset from the bar, when the suburban skies turn molten red. There are rumours that an astronomical amount was spent on the interiors - and if look and feel are anything to go by - they're true. The effect is the atmosphere of a swanky New York/London hot spot complete with maitre'd and a month-long waiting list.Central to the experience is Higgs's fiery grill, which takes centre stage.RARE SIGHT: Centrepiece at Marble is adjustable grill with crank wheelsThere's an element of smoke or fire to every dish - even the salads maintain the ''grilled" theme. We had fired asparagus with cured pork and ash mayo (R115) as one starter, and blackened octopus with crushed paprika potato, candied lemon and squid ink dressing (R185) as the other. Neither knocked my socks off - the grilling of the asparagus made them stringy and I didn't like the look of a grilled tentacle on my plate. But it's the main courses that distinguish the restaurant. They're pricey - but take braaiing to another level.Choose from their Works (individual dishes) or Signatures (four sharing dishes for two people) offerings. We had tuna with broccoli, anchovy, grilled cucumber, coal- roasted salsa (R245) and sirloin with spinach and mushroom salad, roasted cauliflower, marble fries (R265). Both dishes were juicy and tasty.Be prepared to shell out a pretty penny for a dinner at Marble, but if you do, you're guaranteed to be considered part of Johannesburg's trendiest meat-loving set.Corner Jan Smuts and Jellicoe streets, Rosebank, Johannesburg, marble.restaurant, +2710-594-5550NEED TO KNOWWHAT TO DRINK? There's an extensive wine list (the glass wine cellar that separates the bar and the restaurant is a great design feature), but the cocktails from the bar area are in a class of their own - arrive early to catch sunset from the bar balcony.WHAT TO EAT? Steak all the way - there's a range of unusual cuts with great accompaniments.WHAT TO DO? Notice the decor: the antique toothpick boxes, the art and, not least, the stylish bathrooms.MUST TRY? The exciting tapas menu to be ordered from the bar ... and those cocktails...
