Emotions ran high among traditional leaders yesterday at a special meeting of the Contralesa general council in Mthatha, called to discuss whether members should stop supporting the ANC.

Traditional leaders from many parts of Eastern Cape descended on the city to voice their views.

Contralesa is considering forming a political organisation that will contest elections.

The congress said it was disappointed by the ANC, labelling the party arrogant and accusing it of undermining traditional leaders.

Some at yesterday's meeting were strongly opposed to the move but the majority supported it, saying it was long overdue.

"The ANC has ill-treated us for many years and undermined our integrity. There is no coming back. Let us form a new party and fight for our rights as traditional leaders in parliament," said Chief Ayanda Faku to huge applause.

A decision had not been reached by late yesterday. The matter will be discussed at a meeting of the Contralesa national general council at the weekend.
