HANDS UP: DA branding and Xhosa attire can be a scary look for Halloween
HANDS UP: DA branding and Xhosa attire can be a scary look for Halloween

Fancy yourself as a character from Game of Thrones, a comic villain from the DC archives, or one of the scary people we witness on TV when the parliamentary debates are on?

Monday is Halloween and whether you want a classic costume or to nod to a 2016 pop culture hit, do horror in style with easy outfit builders that hit the right note between ghoulish and grotesque.

THE JOKER

Heath Ledger's supervillain might parade around in a purple suit and green waistcoat for most of The Dark Knight, but there is an episode as demented nurse, too. A menacing matron outfit is far easier to come by than silky suiting. Or go for leathers and capped teeth, as Jared Leto did in Suicide Squad - add white face paint, green hairspray, a lot of fake tattoos and one purple glove and you're A for away.

HELEN ZILLE

A little bit of Botox here and a touch of collagen there and voila, you've made everyone's favourite Twitter troll appear. Pop on a pair of studious shades and a demure pantsuit and you are pretty much good to go.

Alternatively, you can re-enact one of Zille's best known public moments by replacing the pantsuit with a DA-branded doek and some traditional Xhosa attire.

JULIUS MALEMA

It couldn't be easier to scare your friends with this ubiquitous costume. Don a red overall, add a red beret or hard hat, spend a few days in Gladwrap to lose the puppy fat and hold a clenched fist above your head. But, most importantly, don't forget to leave your Breitling watch at home, well hidden at the back of the cupboard along with your Louis Vuitton shades and Armani suits.

MELANIA TRUMP

British journalist and socialite Jemima Khan proved that Melania Trump will be one of Halloween 2016's most popular costumes with her take on the potential first lady at the Unicef Halloween Ball. '''Grab 'em by the pussy' #yourworstnightmare," she posted to Instagram ahead of the star-studded event in London. How easy is it to achieve this look? All you need is a white dress, Donald Trump mask and a lot of contouring. Khan employed the help of a makeup artist but to achieve a similar look, buy a contouring kit and watch a YouTube video.

SUICIDE SQUAD'S HARLEY QUINN

This year's anti-hero blockbuster Suicide Squad saw Margot Robbie star as demented supervillain Harley Quinn. With her smeared clown makeup, ripped fishnets, hot pants and studded jewellery, Robbie looked like a Cirque de Soleil acrobat on the loose from a mental asylum. Make sure you dress scantily and act off your proverbial rocker when attempting this look. Wielding a baseball bat is imperative.

ANNA WINTOUR

The US Vogue matriarch is an obvious choice for fashion devotees. A bouclé suit or pencil dress, slingbacks and a razor-sharp bob are essential. Don't forget to employ some interns for the night to carry your Starbucks and sunglasses, too.
