More than 80% of women wear the incorrect bra size. In accordance with the emphasis placed on awareness about breasts during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, mother and son team Penny and Dimitri Parolis, owners of Inner Secrets Lingerie, offer some tips on wearing the right bra. How do you know if you're wearing the correct size bra?The breasts must be lifted out and up from the underwires to make sure all is in place. Then check from the underarm all the way around and in between the breasts, that the underwires are sitting flat and resting snugly against the breastbone. If the breasts are lifting out from the sides or from the top of the cups and are pushing out the wires, the cup is too small. The back band needs to be firm to give the breasts uplifting support. The straps must be tightened so that two fingers fit snugly underneath and the straps should only give 20% of the support. Is there a correct shape for a specific pair? There are many different shape bras which correspond to different shaped breasts - half cup, full cup, full cup support, tulip full cup, moulded, rigid moulded, push-up, plunge, three-quarter cup, etc. A trained corsetiere will determine what bra shape will suit the client. What is the best shape of bra to prevent breasts from sagging?A bra with an underwire.Should we change our bra shapes and sizes as we age?Every woman should strive to have a professional measurement and bra fitting annually as she is subject to hormonal fluctuations and weight changes.Does correct bra sizing affect the health of breasts?Yes, it does. If the wires are protruding continuously into the tissue of the breasts, not only is it immensely uncomfortable but it could create problems. Also, if the straps are too tight on the shoulder, this could cause scarring on the shoulders.Tips for maintaining healthy breasts?A correct fitting bra, done by a professional, preferably annually or with any major body change.Regular breast checks.
