A #FEESMUSTFALL activist who has been held for 62 days will today make another bid for bail. Bonginkosi Khanyile was arrested on September 27 during student protests at the Durban University of Technology.A third-year public administration student, Khanyile is believed to be one of the longest-held students. He is facing eight charges that include public violence, illegal gathering and inciting violence.A group of students, mainly in EFF colours, sang struggle songs and held placards that read: "Bring back our Bonginkosi Khanyile" outside the Durban Magistrate's Court yesterday where Khanyile made a brief appearance. Police and security personnel were forced to lock the doors to the courtroom, allowing in only a limited number after his supporters became rowdy.Khanyile's friend, Khanyiso Ngubane, said they wanted to exert pressure on the court to release him because "he is just a student and not a criminal".'No free ride for poor students'Even the poorest of university students will have to find a way to pay back the money for their tertiary education or risk being nailed by the tax man. "Just imagine... Bonginkosi is among murderers and rapists. Prison is not a place for a student," Ngubane added. "He was just pursuing a cause for free education, now he is being treated like a criminal. We hope he can spend Christmas with us."Anglican priest Vernon Hammond, who is supporting the movement, said: "I did get to see him in court.
