Sensational allegations that Russia has compiled damaging information about US President-elect Donald Trump yesterday drew vehement denials from various quarters.

The salacious claims related to personal and financial matters, said reports.

Russia was aware of "sexual perversion" engaged in by Trump during a visit to Moscow, according to a dossier handed over to US intelligence chiefs last week.

Trump took to Twitter: "Russia has never tried to use leverage over me. I have nothing to do with Russia - no deals, no loans, no nothing!"

The Kremlin denounced the claims as "total nonsense" and "pulp fiction".

"FAKE NEWS - A TOTAL POLITICAL WITCH HUNT!" the president-elect tweeted earlier yesterrday when CNN first broke the news that intelligence officials briefing him last week on allegations of Russian meddling in the US election had also given him a synopsis of the explosive and unverified claims.

CNN said outgoing President Barack Obama had also been briefed on the matter.

Trump's incoming chief of staff, Reince Priebus, said it was "total garbage and I'm keeping it clean" when asked about the report on NBC's Today show.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the dossier containing the claims was a hoax that had been dreamt up to further harm US-Russia relations, which are already at their lowest level since the Cold War.

"It is an attempt to damage our bilateral relations. It is pulp fiction," said Peskov, who also roundly dismissed as false assertions in the dossier that he himself was heavily involved in running a Russian campaign to undermine defeated presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

CNN gave no details of the allegations but US media outlet Buzz-feed published, without corroborating its contents, a 35-page dossier of memos on which the synopsis is based, which had been circulating in Washington for months.

The memos describe sex videos involving prostitutes filmed during a 2013 visit by Trump to a luxury Moscow hotel, supposedly as a potential means for blackmail.

They also suggest Russian officials proposed lucrative deals in order to win influence over the Republican real estate magnate.

The dossier was originally compiled by a former British MI-6 intelligence operative hired by other US presidential contenders to do political "opposition research" on Trump in the middle of last year, according to CNN.

Russia poses a danger to the US and must be held accountable for its actions, Rex Tillerson, Trump's nominee for secretary of state and the former CEO of Exxon Mobil, told senators at his confirmation hearing.

"Our Nato allies are right to be alarmed at a resurgent Russia," Tillerson, 64, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee yesterday.

At the same time, he blamed a lack of US leadership for Russia's aggressiveness, citing "weak or mixed signals with 'red lines' that turned into green lights".

The remarks are a sharp departure from comments by Trump, who has called for a friendlier relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. It's also a stark turnaround for an oil baron who staked billions of dollars on Russia's crude bonanza and as recently as three-and-a-half years ago was feted by Russia with its Order of Friendship.
