Marcos Ondruska's fledgling SA Davis Cup squad wrapped up their Europe-Africa Group II tie against Estonia 4-1 in Irene, Pretoria, yesterday in the presence of former world top-tenner Wayne Ferreira, who tipped young Lloyd Harris as a star in the making.

Ferreira, who reached No6 in the world, was brought in for the weekend as a consultant by Ondruska.

"I'm very impressed by the ability of Lloyd Harris in particular. He has a good future ahead of him," Ferreira said yesterday.

But he said the 19-year-old still had a lot to learn.

"He's still young, plays like a young kid. But with his fundamentals and with his shots, he's perfect. He's got a good base.

"He just needs to develop as a player, make the right shot selections, work on a few things here and there to improve; but he definitely has a bright future."

Ondruska agreed, saying Harris was destined to make the top 20 in the world.

US-based Ferreira said his schedule would determine whether he could be available for South Africa's next tie in early April.

Slovenia, leading Monaco 2-1, looked likely to be their opponents, which would mean a home tie for South Africa.

Ferreira was heartened after informal talks with new Tennis SA CE Richard Glover.

"I think Richard has some good ideas. I have better feelings about it than I did, say, a few years ago."

Ferreira said Tennis SA had made a mistake by not tapping the experience of former top players.

"One year we had 11 guys ranked in the top 100 in doubles. There were a lot of resources they could have used. Richard is open to bringing those guys back in," he said. - TMG Digital/ TMG Sport
