Bottas brings 'Flying Finn' form to early F1 tests
Valterri Bottas showed he can prove an able replacement for retired world champion Nico Rosberg by setting the pace on another dominant morning for Mercedes yesterday on day three of preseason testing in Barcelona.
The Finn set the fastest time for the week so far on three tyre compounds with his best of 1min 19.705sec on ultrasoft tyres, the fastest lap at the Circuit de Catalunya since 2009.
Daniel Ricciardo was the best of the rest for Red Bull in 1min 21.153, while British driver Jolyon Palmer showed promise for Renault, being third-fastest in his 51 laps before lunch.
Ferrari concentrated on mileage over speed after going fastest on Tuesday as Sebastian Vettel logged 69 laps on the slower medium tyres to post only the fourth-fastest time.
At the other end of the grid McLaren-Honda's troubles continued as former world champion Fernando Alonso only managed 28 laps and the eighth- fastest time.
