South Africa's recent drought may have affected a lot of things, but not the production line of all-rounders.

And the national coach and selectors understand their vital role, having named all of the current crop with international experience for the Champions Trophy tournament in England.

Players such as Andile Phehlukwayo, Chris Morris, Dwaine Pretorius and Wayne Parnell are expected to play an important role in the competition

A minimum of three matches in the group stages - in which India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka lie in wait - will not give all of them the opportunity to play but there are warm-up matches and three ODIs against England after the Champions Trophy in which all of them can prove their eventual worth. But the fact that they were all given a run in the New Zealand ODI series speaks volumes in terms of what coach Russell Domingo is expecting from them.

From a death-bowling perspective, Phehlukwayo has proved he is the real deal at domestic and international level, while Chris Morris has improved in leaps and bounds in that area during the IPL in India.

Phehlukwayo's imperfect but nerveless batting has won games for South Africa and his age allows time to smooth the rough edges.

Pretorius is probably the best batsman of the lot and the steadier bowler to keep things tight in the middle overs.

The Lions have used him effectively as a middle-order pulveriser but at first-class level he has shown he can build an innings.

This is a crucial quality in early- season England when conditions are difficult at first and the toss can often decide the outcome.
