The government's anti-corruption team is investigating the Eskom coal deal with the Gupta company Tegeta which was mentioned in former public protector Thuli Madonsela's 2016 State of Capture report.

The corruption-busting body made the announcement while briefing the standing committee on public accounts (Scopa) in parliament yesterday.

It was established in 2010 as a multidepartment body to fast-track the investigation of high-profile corruption cases. It is co-chaired by the heads of the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

The team's joint chairman, acting Hawks head Yolisa Matakata, told the committee that it was dealing with cases in the "public space", including cases involving state capture.

"We are working on what is popularly referred to as 'state capture'. We are investigating these matters in consultation with the National Prosecuting Authority," said Matakata.

She told the committee that the team was also working on the "Nkandla investigation".

"There are prosecutors looking into this matter."

Those appearing before Scopa included national director of public prosecutions Shaun Abrahams, SA Revenue Services head Tom Moyane and Independent Police Investigative Directorate chief Robert McBride.

Abrahams said there were "seven legs to the [state capture] investigation".

"Only one of these legs is currently the subject of investigation by the anti-corruption task team. That is the Tegeta, Eskom-related matter."

Abrahams said Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane had referred Madonsela's report to the NPA.

He said other legs of the investigation were being investigated by the Hawks.

Committee chairman Themba Godi said Scopa would grill Eskom representatives next week.
