Travel Weekly speaks to Richard Nwamba, hosts of The African Connection music show on SAFM

In Maputo, Mozambique.

What was the best thing you did while there?

Besides eating king-size prawns I watched boats and ships sail by. Next time I plan to lose some weight so I can swim as well!

Your favourite city abroad, and why?

Definitely Paris. The French designed that city with pedestrians in mind. It is the only place I know where you can eat and walk on the pavement.

What must a first-time visitor see there?

Certainly not the Eiffel Tower as it will see you before you see it. Most definitely the museums - all of them!

What should they not bother with?

Trying to suntan on the Seine in summer. It is just so unnatural!

What was your best holiday, ever?

It was in Ghana. Visiting Elmina Castle in Cape Coast, walking on top of giant trees in the Kakum Forest, riding a horse at Labadi Beach in Accra and eating some of the best goat meat in the world!

What was your worst holiday ever? What happened?

It was in Malawi in 1989 when President Kamuzu Banda was still in power. The country did not have a single TV station and there was no nightlife whatsoever. I constantly had this feeling that the police would beat me up.

Which is the worst hotel you have stayed in?

Machiphisa in Harare, Zimbabwe. It was exactly as the name implied - cheap and seedy!

What is the best thing you have been given on holiday ... or pinched from a hotel?

The chocolate at the Serena Hotel in Nairobi. It was the welcome gift and I felt like checking out and checking in again just so I could have a repeat.

Who would be your fantasy holiday companion and why?

Married men never fantasise! Don't you know that?

Your favourite SA destination, and why?

Cape Town. The mixture of the sea and majestic Table Mountain intoxicates me.

Have you had any embarrassing moments as a traveller?

Yes, in January this year. The immigration officer in Singapore said I looked much older than I did in my passport photo! He laughed and I didn't.
