Where did you spend your last holiday?

In the bush at Nkelenga, a self-catering tented camp in the Thornybush private game reserve.

What was the best thing you did while there?

Stood next to the pool with mates, holding a beer while a huge male lion walked past the lodge about 20m from us. You suddenly realise we are not the top of the food chain.

Your favourite city abroad and why?

Hue, Vietnam, because of the temples and the food.

What must a first-time visitor see there?

Go out to the Buddhist monastery in the forest just before noon and quietly sit on the side of the open eating area. The monks chant for about half an hour before their food. It is one of the most beautiful things to hear in magnificent surroundings.

What should they not bother with?

Doing the commercial streets.

What was your best holiday, ever?

Driving British Columbia for four weeks in winter to get to Jasper and Lake Louise in the Rockies and to Whistler, north of Vancouver. Snow everywhere and the temperature got to -38°C before wind chill. You don't stop for a pee on the side of the road.

What was your worst holiday ever? What happened?

Holidays are what you make them and we tend to look for the funny side of anything so we still enjoy ourselves even when things may not be perfect.

Which is the worst hotel you have stayed in?

A hotel that my wife Jacqui booked on the Internet on Palawan Island in the Philippines. Hideous. The best night we had was when we took a dhow to a small island close by. There was a turtle breeding ground and we slept on the beach with the turtles. She's not allowed to do Internet bookings EVER again.

What is the best thing you have been given on holiday?

I can't tell you that, my wife gets cross when I discuss our sex life in public!

Who would be your fantasy holiday companion and why?

Jacqui. We enjoy the same sort of holidays and destinations. And also that whole sex thing that I can't discuss comes into it.
