My Kind of Holiday: Malcolm Kluk
Fashion designer Malcolm Kluk, who apprenticed under John Galliano, has dressed Beyoncé Knowles and Charlize Theron, among other local and international celebrities.
Where did you spend your last holiday?
The US and Mexico.
What was the best thing you did?
In Las Vegas, we stayed at the Bellagio and were upgraded to a corner penthouse (the best in the hotel). We also watched the show O by Cirque du Soleil, which was mesmerising.
Your favourite city abroad and why?
Mumbai for its mix of culture and modernity.
What must a first-time visitor see there?
The Taj Palace Hotel - we were there just before the terrorist attack. Mumbai looks Third World from the outside but has incredibly sophisticated design and food.
What should they not bother with?
Always bother with everything.
What was your best holiday ever?
Ten days in Egypt for a friend's 40th birthday. It was magical.
What was your worst holiday ever?
Vermaaklikheid in the Western Cape for New Year. We arrived at night in the rain to be told we had to canoe to the house across the river. We had to leave our suitcase in the car until morning. Once across the water and wet, we found our room dusty, shabby, hot and uncomfortable. We left before sunrise.
What is the best thing you have pinched from a hotel?
The Golden Apple Hotel in Moscow was so expensive that we helped ourselves to the decorative arrangement of apples in catering quantities.
Who would be your fantasy holiday companion and why?
Director Tim Burton and photographer Tim Walker. Their imaginations would make for an interesting trip.
Your favourite restaurant anywhere?
Los Caracoles in Barcelona. The front door opens onto a tiny bar. You walk through the incredibly ornate, tiled kitchen and arrive in the dining hall, with frenzied waiters serving the most delicious charcoal-cooked chicken ever.
Malcolm KlukIn Sweden, I ordered a Swedish plate, which turned out to be just herring, but looked and tasted like a dare from Fear Factor.
