South Africa would host its first national tourism awards in September, Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk said on Saturday.

Van Schalkwyk announced in Durban that the awards were aimed at recognising excellence and improving industry standards.

The Lilizela Awards would have five categories.

Van Schalkwyk, who was speaking at the Tourism Indaba said South Africa's strongest selling point was its culture and heritage.

He said South Africa had eight world heritage sites.
