Tourism Breaking News: Discount Vouchers!

Now there’s 2.5 million good reasons to go on holiday in South Africa.

SOUTH AFRICA’S TRAVEL and tourism industry is inviting the nation to get out there, get travelling and go on holiday. And it’s offering locals nearly 2.5 million special discount offers this month, during national Tourism Month in September, to do exactly that: enjoy the countless pleasures that a holiday in South Africa offers.

As from September 1, South Africans wanting to travel and explore Mzansi can redeem the vouchers that include special offers and significant savings for thirty different travel leisure activities and 51 accommodation establishments across the country.

Discounts range from 65 percent off the usual price for a stay in a four-star hotel in Gauteng, to a saving of R400 off the price of a boat-based whale watching adventure in the Western Cape. Other offers include 40 percent off a two hour Kayak & Lilo adventure on the Storms River in Tsitsikamma. Or, if viewing the Big Five is for you, then for five percent off, the entire family can experience a truly unique experience on a walking safari in the Kruger National Park.

The vouchers which are being offered by travel trade partners exhibiting at this year’s Getaway Show will be distributed at the show, taking place from 31 August to 2 September 2012, at the Coca-Cola Dome in Northgate, Johannesburg.

Thirty thousand booklets of vouchers (each containing 82 different special offers and discounts) will be distributed to visitors at the Getaway show, one of the country’s biggest consumer travel shows.

“Domestic tourism contributed R20.3 billion and 76% of our country’s total tourism volume in 2011, so it’s critical that we get South Africans travelling and encourage them to be tourists in their own country. South Africa is a world-class tourist destination and locals have a variety of fun, affordable and accessible experiences available to them on their doorstep. We want to thank the South African tourism trade for offering these wonderful discounts, which will go a long way to making travelling Mzansi even more affordable for all South Africans,” says Thulani Nzima, South African Tourism’s Chief Executive Officer. As from September 1, the vouchers will also be made available to the public on South African Tourism’s Vaya Mzansi Facebook page, www.facebook.com/vayamzansi.

The National Department of Tourism and South African Tourism will launch national Tourism Month at the Gauteng Getaway Show on August 31, signalling a period of sustained focus from the tourism industry on promoting domestic travel.

Now in its twentieth year, The Getaway Show is Africa’s leading travel and outdoor show. Last year the show attracted more than 25 000 visitors.

South African Tourism continually works on supporting the trade to effectively package affordable deals for South Africans to travel their own country, regularly presenting market insights to the local tourism sector in special trade workshops. These insights are gained through research of what South Africans want from their travelling experiences in the country, where and how they consume their travel information and how the South African tourist market is segmented.

The workshops educate the local travel trade on packaging travel deals for South Africans and are facilitated and attended by various tourism stakeholders, such as the Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa (FEDHASA-Inland), Provincial Tourism Authorities, travel agents, trade product and local tourism offices.

South African Tourism also makes various marketing tools available to the local trade. These include using the domestic travel campaign’s ‘Vaya Mzansi’ Facebook page, www.facebook.com/vayamzansi to load deals on the Timeline; and registering on the South African Travel Directory on the South African Tourism website (this tool can be accessed by anyone across the world looking for tourism services, from accommodation to tour operators). FUNDI is South African Tourism’s long-standing education programme that trade may utilise to learn about destination South Africa and become an expert in selling South African holidays to both foreign and domestic tourists.

South African Tourism will soon present a comprehensive workshop for trade, in collaboration with various business units that work with the grading of tourism establishments; and the promotion of service excellence within the tourism industry. The workshop will be designed to help small and medium businesses make the most out of the domestic tourism market, and will be an indispensable source of support, knowledge and insights for the travel trade.

South African Tourism will extensively participate in the inaugural South African Travel and Tourism Industry Conference (SATTIC) from 2-4 September 2012 at the OR Tambo Protea Hotel in Ekurhuleni, facilitated by the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA).

World Tourism Day celebrations take place on 27 September 2012 in the Eastern Cape, with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (theme) this year of ‘Tourism & Sustainable Energy: Powering Sustainable Development’.
