Police in India have taken DNA samples from a young girl after a British tourist saw her and thought she looked like Madeleine McCann.

British tabloid The Sun reported that the tourist was part of a group of holidaymakers in the northern Indian city of Leh who saw the child with a man and a woman.

Private investigators are now looking into the sighting, made by the British woman and two Americans, of the girl who will now be eight years old.

The three tourists tried to take the child from the couple, who claimed to be her French mother and Belgian father.

Police have confiscated their passports while they investigate.

The Sun quoted Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for Madeleine's parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, saying: "Our private investigators are aware of the reports from India at the weekend about a possible sighting of Madeleine.

"We are liaising with the Indian authorities over the incident and await the results of the DNA test."

Madeleine was three when she disappeared from the family's holiday flat in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.
