A fitness coach was arrested at Munich airport after trying to smuggle 36 live snakes into Germany, custom officials said Friday.

The snakes, which were thought to be young pythons, were hidden in a canvas bag in the passenger's hand luggage.

The 22-year-old, who flew to Germany from Australia via Dubai, had originally stated he had nothing to declare.

The find was believed to have been the largest of its kind in Germany.

The snakes were being held in a reptile sanctuary in Munich
