Obama is the man, says survey

Reuters | 07 February, 2012 00:46

US president Barack Obama - bolstered by a stronger economic outlook and recent job growth - would win in a match against leading Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, a poll yesterday showed.

A Washington Post-ABC News survey of 1000 adults found that, for the first time, Obama's prospects had brightened against his potential rivals as his job approval numbers climbed thanks to his handling of the slowly recovering economy.

If the election were held now, Obama would win 51% of the vote against Republican frontrunner Romney, a former Massachusetts governor.

He would win with 54% against Gingrich, former speaker of the House of Representatives, who has vowed to fight on for his party's nomination.

The poll, by telephone from February 1 through February 4, showed that Obama scored higher than Romney when it came to taxes and protecting the middle class.

Obama was more trusted to handle international affairs and terrorism, but Obama and Romney tied when it came to potential for job creation.

More of those surveyed said they trusted Romney to handle the economy and the federal budget deficit.

Obama's job approval rating rose to 50%, according to the survey, which has a sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points.

Asked if Obama deserved a second term, 49% said yes and 49% said no.
