Fuel-laden ship sinks, captain killed

A supply ship has sunk outside the Greek port of Elefsis, west of Athens, killing its captain, but the 10 other crew members were rescued.

The Merchant Marine Ministry said the Alpha 1 vessel sank on Monday after travelling from the nearby port of Piraeus.

Divers later found the body of the ship's 48-year-old captain, according to ministry officials, who said the cause of the sinking not immediately clear.

The ship was carrying 1,800 metric tons of heavy fuel oil, and a floating barrier was set up around the site of the sinking to prevent pollution if an oil spill occurred.
