'Lobbyists are the corruptive soul of the movement': Mathews Phosa

ANC members who lobby in the party's branches for a change in leadership are corrupting the movement, ANC treasurer general Mathews Phosa has told the Sunday Times.

"Lobbyists are the corruptive soul of the movement... we must allow space for the branches to do nominations in October. ANC policies are clear," he said in an interview with the newspaper.

"Branches of the ANC do not owe us a second term... They owe us a proper assessment of the situation and [then need to] decide what is in the best interests of the country."

He said branches should use the time before nominations opened in October to assess how the party's leadership had performed, instead of listening to lobby groups.

"They must assess us now [and] they must be encouraged to assess us. They can't start assessing us in October when they must nominate," Phosa said.

The Sunday Times reported that members opposing a second term for President Jacob Zuma had released a list of candidates for the African National Congress's top six positions, against the party's protocol.

The list included deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe for party president, and Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale as his deputy.

The ANC's elective conference will be held in Mangaung in December.

Catch a wake Mathews, the ANC is already corrupt, lobbyists are trying to save it.

Ever since the Mbeki saga. there has been this idea that panic mode is good. It isn't. We have the ABZ (anybody but Zuma) being bantered around but no subjective, thoughtful, logical discussion about the pros and cons of the various candidates, This shouldn't be brought down to a contest of who is most liked but brought up to a discussion about who would be BEST for the entire country.

Hey, Cde Mathews,

How many <nudge-nudge wink-wink> directorships and "consultancies" have YOU held?

NO Phosa! Not so: corruptive forces are those who suppress change - SA's MOST CRITICALLY needed change! Corruptive forces are those like yourself and Zuma who try to hold on to power despite cay to day realities - STOP trying to suppress much needed change - zuma had enough time to prove or disprove himself - he FAILED!

Mr Phosa - the issue is South Africa, our COUNTRY and NOT the "movement." There IS a difference you know - can you SPOT it?
