At least 64 Taliban fighters have been killed in a series of security operations across Afghanistan in the last 24 hours, the Afghan Interior Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

The operations took place in seven provinces, with the Afghan police and army supported by NATO-led coalition forces, all working to clear the area of insurgents, according to a statement from the ministry.

Afghan security forces have ramped up operations across the country to clear areas of insurgents' stronghold, in preparation for 2014 presidential elections, according to officials.

Earlier, a senior Afghan police officer was shot and injured in southern Afghanistan by unknown gunmen, an official said, two months after her predecessor was gunned down.

"Lieutenant Negar, 34, was shot by two unknown armed men riding a motorbike this morning in front of her house in Lashkar Gah city when she was going to office," said Amar Zwak, the governor's spokesman for Helmand province.

"The bullet hit Negar's shoulder and she was immediately taken to the hospital," Zwak told dpa, adding that her condition was not critical.

Negar has been in the force for five years, and succeeded Islam Bibi in the women's investigation section of Helmand police's criminal unit.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack on Negar.

Islam Bibi was shot dead in a similar attack in July in the city of Lashkar Gah.
