An Arizona gun instructor was killed after a nine-year-old girl was given an Uzi to use on the range.

According to Fox News affiliate Fox 5, when the young girl fired the gun the recoil sent it back over her head, resulting in the instructor, Charles Vacca, being struck in the head.

Her parents were apparently on the range with her, as her father had handled the gun first.

The Mohave County Sheriff's department has taken the event as a learning experience.

"It's so easy for us to go back and look at something that's very tragic and say, 'Boy! Why did that occur? That should not have happened because of,'" said Mohave County Sheriff Jim McCabe. "Well, maybe from now on, that 'because of' will be in place."
