Albert S. Hall School in Waterville, Maine had a programme where pupils grew 100 onions - half of which were supposed to go to the poor, the other half to the school kitchens.

The plan appeared to be going very well, according to an AP report, at least until it came time for harvest.

When the pupils went out to harvest their onions, the found that they had all been stolen.

Student Ashley Harwood called the theft "kind of depressing." Student Hannah Hall says the class was sad, according to the report.

Their teacher Mary Dunn meanwhile decided to try and salvage the lesson, by making it about coming together when things don't go as planned.
