Indian Premier Narendra Modi discussed an alleged incursion by Chinese soldiers into Indian territory with visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping early Thursday, media reports said.

Some 1,000 soldiers from each side faced off in the Ladakh region in India's Jammu and Kashmir state, broadcaster NDTV reported. The figures would make it the worst transgression by Chinese forces in years.

Modi raised the issue with Xi on Wednesday, the opening day of his three-day India visit, the news channel reported, citing government sources.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said India would raise the incursions more extensively during summit-level talks between Xi and Modi in New Delhi on Thursday afternoon.

The face-off on the Himalayan border cast a shadow over Xi's visit, which was likely to see boosting of trade and announcements of huge investments into India.

The border between the Asian giants was never clearly demarcated and accusations of border violations by either country have been routine.

According to the Indian home ministry, there have been as many as 334 transgressions by Chinese forces at the borders between January and August.

China and India have several frontier disputes, mainly left over from a brief border war fought in the Himalayas in 1962. Tensions occasionally flare up and the two sides have been engaged in long-term talks to resolve differences.
