Dramatic footage emerges of the aftermath of a crash on Alton Towers 'Smiler' rollercoaster ride, leaving sixteen people injured.

Alton Towers is located near the village of Alton in Staffordshire.

The accident involved two carriages - one containing 16 passengers and the other empty clashed on a low section of the track, at around 2.09pm according to EspressandStar news.

The empty carriage was reported to be stationary at the time, it had been sent to test the track after an earlier problem.

Witnesses reported hearing passengers screaming for help, some covered in blood.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service had to erect a platform to help people off the ride.

According to BBC the theme park seemed to have a history of accidents and incidents involving the £18m ride since it opened in May 2013.

  • 16 journalists were left dangling as they tried out the rollercoaster ride before the park opened its gates to the public.
  • July 2013 a piece of the track fell off, 48 people had to be  rescued.
  • August 2013 the park closed for five days due to technical issues.
  • November 2013,  the wheels flew off injuring four.
  • 14 months ago riders were stranded as the ride came to a halt near a vertical section.

 

 

A full investigation by the  Theme park is underway.
