The Japan Meterological Agency on Sunday upgraded the magnitude of the devastating earthquake two days ago to 9 from 8.8.

The US Geological Survey measured Friday's quake, which triggered a tsunami, at 8.9.

A geophysicist of the US agency, meanwhile, told CNN that the quake had shifted the Japan landmass sideways by at least 2.4 metres and moved the earth's axis by about 8 centimetres.

More than 650 people lost their lives and 390,000 people sought refuge in shelters.Author: Ivonne Marschall
