There is to be a review of the performances of athletes at the recent Olympics. Why do government ministers not carry out assessments of their own performances? They expect the highest levels of performance from athletes, yet express satisfaction with a 33% matric pass rate.

Unlike politicians, athletes work tirelessly towards improving their times by milliseconds. On the world stage, against top athletes, winning gold is not achievable for everyone. Instead of judging athletes on the medals they win, we should focus on the times athletes went into the Games with.

While most athletes return home having "failed" to even make the finals, they have often succeeded in achieving a personal best time or even breaking a national or African record.
