At a time when there is an abundance of DJs, there are very few who truly get the nod from experts in the field. This is where Emille Lottering breaks the mould under his pseudonym Star the DJ.

Having recently won over two of the country’s top DJs Kyle Cassim and Roger Goode, Star the DJ is looking to dominate the local industry with his eclectic use of multiple genres that leaves audiences dancing between revelry and awe.

After taking the top nod at the Smirnoff Storm Room DJ competition, Star lets us in on what makes him a star, his music and the top spots outside the country that he would love to dominate.

How did you get into music?

It came from my mother and father. I grew up in a musical family where all my siblings sing, and I chose to be a producer/DJ.

What inspired your stage name?

I got it in high school. I never got any negative energy from anyone and it always made me feel like a star, and that’s what inspired the name.

What helped you clinch the win at the Smirnoff Storm Stage competition?

I think it was the way I presented myself through my music. I didn’t want to go up there with a normal set. I did mash-ups that I made myself with different styles of music mixed with amapiano.

There’s a lot of people trying to get out there as DJs, what makes you stand out?

I bring something different to the table. I do my own ad-libs and play with a lot of genres, like mixing house and amapiano or R&B and hip hop with EDM. I like to make something unique so that you experience something you’ve never heard before.

Are there any countries you would like to travel to and perform in?

  • London
  • New York
  • Abu Dhabi

What can fans look out for from you this year?

I’m planning to release a single this year and play my mixes on Fridays on 5FM.
