The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating the police's shooting dead a Zimbabwean embassy official in Pretoria over the weekend.

"I can confirm that we are investigating it. Our investigators attended the scene on Saturday," spokesman Moses Dlamini said on Monday.

Dlamini said preliminary investigations indicated that police went to a housing estate in Lynnwood, Pretoria, to investigate robberies, and while about to question possible suspects, the two men tried to escape.

Plainclothes officers in an unmarked car shot at them, killing one and wounding the other.

"The post-mortem will be done today," he said.

The Star newspaper reported on Monday that an off-duty policeman shot Lucky Hakueri while he was waiting to pick up a friend. A police officer with an R5 rifle approached Hakueri and his friend. Thinking they were being hijacked they sped off and the officer shot at them.
