A Kaizer Chiefs soccer player has been arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

"The incident happened on Sunday in Silverton, Pretoria, where he allegedly assaulted the girlfriend and damaged her vehicle," Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said.

The 26-year-old was arrested on Tuesday. He is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court soon on charges of assault and damage to property.

Kaizer Chiefs said on its website the club had been informed that George Lebese had been accused of being involved in an incident.

"The player has handed himself over to the relevant authorities and the matter is being attended to," the statement read.
