A 22-year-old man was arrested on the N12 eastbound in Alberton driving 234km/h on Sunday, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

"The driver claimed that he was rushing his younger brother to a soccer practice in Meyersdal," Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said.

The man was driving a Volkswagen Scirocco when he was caught.

Other drivers were arrested on the highway between the R59 and Voortrekker turnoff on Sunday.

A 25-year-old in a Ford Kanga was caught driving at 173km/h.

The man said he was rushing to help a friend who had been arrested for drunk driving.

A second man in a Mini Cooper was arrested when he was caught driving 166km/h.

"[He] claimed he was testing the power of his newly acquired toy," Kgasago said.

All those arrested were granted R1500 bail and expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court soon.
