The SA Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) has laid criminal charges against former Wits SRC President Mcebo Dlamini “for racist and defamatory comments” made against the South African Jewish community last week‚ describing it as hate speech. Dlamini‚ infamous for his "I love Adolf Hitler" Facebook post in April‚ insulted the Jewish community during a live interview on Power FM on June 23‚ stating: “They are devils. They are good for nothing. They are hypocritical‚ just like [Wits University Vice-Chancellor] Adam Habib. They are uncircumcised in heart”.“Dlamini’s comments are the latest in a series of offensive public statements that he made about South African Jews over the past nine months. The SAJBD already has a complaint of hate speech against him pending before the SA Human Rights Commission‚ and has asked the Commission to add his Power FM remarks to the existing charges‚” the Board said in a statement on Monday.Dlamini was sacked as Wits Student Representative Council president in May by Professor Habib.In an e-mail to students‚ Habib said removing Dlamini from the leadership of the SRC had nothing to do with his Hitler statement and was due to a finding of misconduct by a disciplinary panel in February."For the purposes of clarity‚ I would also like to state that the separate matter of Dlamini's recent declaration of admiration for the fascist leader‚ Adolf Hitler‚ and what I believe to be racist comments regarding whites‚ did not influence my decision to require him to step down‚" Habib said at the time.According to Dlamini‚ there was a physical altercation - "pushing and shoving"- between him and a complainant about a year-and-a-half ago‚ before he came into office. He said the two forgave each other and the other student agreed to drop charges. He said the university initially agreed to allow this but later reversed its decision.The South African Students’ Congress‚ meanwhile‚ instructed Dlamini to retract his controversial praise for Adolf Hitler. At least 36 former Black Student Society (BSS) and SRC presidents of Wits University have also endorsed a statement condemning Dlamini’s Hitler statements.The Wits SRC distanced itself from Dlamini's views‚ with general secretary Senzekahle Mbokazi saying: "As the SRC we condemn the actions of Hitler in the strongest terms and we find equally deplorable the generalisation that all white people have elements of Hitler in them.
