The Opel Mokka seemed to drag its feet in arriving on the local scene. It’s finally here and, curiously, aims to straddle the lines of the B and C crossover segments.

We attended the launch in East London last week, so be sure to look out for our driving impressions in the IgnitionLIVE print supplement, in The Times and Sowetan newspapers this Thursday. In the meantime, we’ve got specifications and prices.

There is one engine derivative on offer, a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol mill with 103kW and 200Nm of torque. It’s mated to a six-speed manual transmission, or Opel’s new Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. It’ll only be available with front-wheel drive.

Two specification levels serve buyers; the starter Enjoy and the more generously equipped Cosmo. That said, the list of features on the Enjoy is by no means short: cruise control, climate control, Bluetooth, satellite audio controls on the steering wheel, a tyre pressure monitor and daytime running lights are all part of the package. The only option you can specify is Opel’s IntelliLink colour screen interface.

In the Cosmo, things are taken up a notch with IntelliLink as standard, plus leather upholstery, rain-sensing wipers and a reverse camera, among other things. The Enjoy manual costs R288 500 and the Cosmo goes for R325 500. Add R10 000 if you want the automatic transmission.
