Toyota on Wednesday launched its all-new Rumion MPV.

Based on the Suzuki Ertiga and built to succeed the aged Avanza, this spacious seven-seater is easy on the eye with its chrome trapezoidal radiator grille, large tapered headlamps and surprisingly aggressive lower apron that houses stylised air vents and – model grade dependent – front fog lights.

While the rear is more busy, it does get a pair of extra large, extra visible LED taillights.

As TimesLIVE Motoring reported earlier this week, the Rumion is available in three model grades.

Kicking things off is the basic S derivative that hits the street with a set of 15-inch steel wheels (sans any covers), manual air-conditioning, a front 12-volt power socket and electric windows. Other useful features include ventilated front cup holders (to help keep beverages hot or cold) and 60:40 folding second row seating. Although an audio system is not included, the Rumion S does come with dual front airbags as well as ABS brakes.

Next up is the mid-tier SX model that upgrades the overall ambiance somewhat with the addition of smart plastic wheel covers and a Bluetooth-equipped Toyota Double Din audio with four speakers. Those sitting in the back will benefit from an additional 12-volt power socket to help keep things charged as well as separate controls for the air-conditioning that allow passengers to set their desired fan speed and/or temperature independently from those sitting up front. The SX is also equipped with a multifunction steering wheel, park distance control, a rear window demister — and wiper — and remote central locking.

Finally, the flagship TX model builds on the specification of the SX with 15-inch alloy wheels, chrome door handles and front fog lights. Climb inside the cabin and you'll be met by a fancy touchscreen infotainment system that's not only linked to six speakers but also offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility as well as a reversing camera. Other TX-exclusive features include keyless entry with push start faux-wood dashboard trim.

From launch all Toyota Rumion models are fitted with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine churning out 77kW and 138Nm. While the S is only available with a five-speed manual gearbox, both the SX and TX can be fitted with an optional four-speed automatic. According to Toyota both transmission types return 6.2l/100km on the combined cycle.
