Mazda on Wednesday revealed its sleek Iconic SP concept at the Japan Mobility Show.

Premiered with an updated fourth-generation MX-5, this beautifully proportioned electric concept car marries a dual-rotor rotary engine with an energy-dense battery pack and a yet to be disclosed number of electric motors (we're guessing two).

Acting as range extender, the rotary engine keeps the vehicle's battery pack charged and has the potential to be run on a variety of propellants including petrol, synthetic e-fuels or even hydrogen. Mazda claims a total system output of 272kW, which should give the 1,450kg Iconic SP concept fairly snappy straight-line performance. When not in use the vehicle can power external devices during electricity outages.

Measuring 4,180mm long, 1,850mm wide and 1,150mm tall, Mazda says the Iconic SP concept sports a low centre of gravity and 50:50 weight distribution to help deliver excellent dynamic driving performance. Its unique proportions are made possible by a low bonnet, achieved by mounting the ultra-compact rotary engine in the centre of the car.

“We love the MX-5 and the world loves the MX-5,” said Mazda president Masahiro Moro.

We are determined in the age of electrification to keep the joy of driving which the MX-5 represents alive, and the Iconic SP, with its dual rotary power generator EV powertrain, is our dream solution. A dream we will work hard to launch. Mazda will always deliver vehicles that remind people that cars are pure joy and an indispensable part of their lives.”
