Some people enjoy a good walk. Most people don't. Most people are lazy and couldn't be arsed to leg it down to the local KFC during their lunch hour. These people will be thrilled to hear that a Japanese company called is bringing out something called the WalkCar. Resembling a 13-inch laptop in size and stature the 2.8-kilogram, hewn-from-carbon-fibre WalkCar is a super compact solution to personal urban mobility.
Basically a Macbook on four wheels it packs a small electric electric motor than can propel you along the pavement at speeds of up to 16km/h – as long as you weigh less than 120-kilograms (I know, a tall order for many South Africans). To steer it you basically shift your body weight from one side to the other much like you would on a skateboard. Braking? Easy, you just hop off.
An hour's charge will give you an hour's worth of operating time. And when you're not using the WalkCar it slips easily into a backpack or handbag. Or the boot of your car. Pricing? Pre-orders have already begun with Cocoa Motors retailing the WalkCar for US$1280. Not bad. Although whether or not they will offer shipping and delivery to South Africa remains to be seen. – Thomas Falkiner
