Two 44-year-old men died after a shooting in a production hall at Mercedes-Benz’s Sindelfingen factory outside Stuttgart, with one victim succumbing to his wounds in hospital, according to local police.

The alleged assailant, a 53-year-old man, was arrested, police said on Thursday . They are investigating the motives.

Mercedes said the victims and the perpetrator were employees of an external service provider. Production in the affected hall was stopped and will be suspended until the end of the week. Other operations in the plant are continuing.

Sindelfingen is one of Mercedes’ largest factories worldwide and produces upscale cars like the S-Class luxury sedan.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic news from Sindelfingen,” Mercedes said.

“Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and all colleagues on site.”

The company declined to comment on possible motives, citing ongoing official investigations.
