About 1‚000 sugar workers employed by Illovo are preparing to embark on a strike after wage negotiations resulted in a deadlock last week‚ the Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) said on Sunday.

It said the union and employers from eight Illovo farms in KwaZulu-Natal had failed to reach an amicable agreement under the auspices of the CCMA and that a strike certificate had been issued.

Among other demands‚ FAWU is demanding a 10% wage increase‚ a provident fund for seasonal and full-time workers‚ and 50% maternity leave for all full-time and seasonal workers.
